'FOR' Exhibiton

Me and some other artists will be showing work in an exhibition called 'FOR' at the Darnley Road Gallery. All details are in the above poster.

Press release;
'For' brings together a group of artists working with sculpture, video, painting, writing and sound. Adopting a simple visual conversation as their target, when the “this” of the here and now becomes the “that” of the there and then.

Lara Kenworthy focuses on the anxiety driven artist and the struggles of success and failure that come with their work. She believes that as humans, we continually try to overcome impossible tasks, with the vision of hopelessness, but being endlessly hopeful. Documenting props in moving image creates a fluid dialogue for viewers to perform as voyeur in the situations that she creates. Viewers relate themselves to the surreal situations, highlighting the madness that we inevitably encounter in everyday life.

Paul Thiry creates paintings without the use of the traditional methods. Making rough but aesthetically pleasing works using fabric, sewing and collage on top of stretchers, his work explores the restrictions and limitations of what painting can be.

Joss Heierli’s assemblages investigate contemporary popular culture. Presenting a symbol of mortality and fragility, the shameless allure emphasises the power of the artist to transform things into cynical deadening splendor.

Rupert Dorey’s practice is not medium specific but tends to take the form of video or filmed performance. It looks at the surreal nature of the self and its clash with the familiarity of being human. Inexperience is tested in order to provoke the often comic reaction of the everyday in settings that contort its effect

Dwayne Coleman dyes and paints directly onto canvas. The work references past styles that embed the work with a sense of nostalgia, also reacting to more contemporary subcultural trends. Whilst using kitsch patterns, as an attempt to amusingly discuss the effort to be cool, at the same time indirectly critiquing himself

Laura O’Neill’s sculptural objects hover between the familiar and the foreign. Rejoicing humor and elegance in the crudely made, preplanned or improvised, reflects our attempts as human beings to create the beautiful, useful or meaningful, that end most often in failure.

Owen Lacey observes everyday mundane objects and events to inspire his low brow, overwhelming and sometimes underwhelming work. The circles he has created are created to make the circles exist, and the reason they exist is because they have been created.

Sean Lavelle uses the methodologies associated with materials to create forms. With an architectural approach, forms fill and interpret the space exaggerating and examining function. These forms stand like great monoliths of discarded objects, which hold the integrity of the materials.

Frank Richards looks at the conflict between order & chaos, and an exploration of non-existent spaces & forms. His work allows a series of random generation algorithms to produce math-based soundscapes, and to interfere with the composition of motion-picture.

Eliska Murray explores the relationship between the female form and body. With surrealist tendencies, she creates sculptures and videos that depict suggestive situations in order to bring forward a sensation and mood to the video

I recently started some new paintings. These painting are exploring the same themes as my Tie Paintings with exactly the same means but just with a different kitch item.
This time I have chose to use floral patterns. I feel the same ideas can be expressed by using this, as I feel there isn't much difference between tie-dye and floral - they both have an extensive history, they both are kitch and both have been in and out of fashion more times then the Jheri Curl. For my forthcoming show I am working on some Marble Paintings to go along side my Tie Dye paintings. These are going to be on fabriano paper at around 100cm x 150cm.

I'm figuring out the technique now. It is harder than I thought. Here are two I prepared earlier.

Meanwhile, I am doing a collaborative project with a New York based artist called, Laura Marchi. Where we react from each others paintings via internet. Interpreting one-another's ideas and developing it into our own. Or something like that. These are the paintings I am going to start with.

Tie Dye Paintings.

These Tie Dye paintings with bold text evolve from my interest in trends, and subcultures that become out of date and eventually are recycled into ironic means. Examples of this is Tie Dye and words such as ‘naff, ‘lame’, ‘rad’, etcetera.

To form these paintings, the kitsch, the uncool, and the out-of-fashion formed the foundation, which was under-laying throughout the process. Deciding this was important because my theory of irony, being recycled highly involved cool and uncool trends. I chose tie-dye as an ambassador for the kitsch. The pattern can be beautiful at times and has substance trailing from the periods from which it evolved. Compared to the impact tie-dye had in the late 1960’s, tie-dye is a stale trend. This made it my prime choice of style to use, plus I have a previous relationship with the trend and dying process. A corresponding reason is that tie-dye and the words never become extinct and instead become reincarnated - Reincarnated into socially unacceptable themes that are ironic to use/wear.

These paintings investigate the idea of ‘Post Irony’, that suggests that irony is in-fact dead. I find this intriguing, as it is part of British culture. As a nation we are known to use sarcasm and irony quite often. To use irony, is like using a façade, which shields any reaction that may come our way. With irony being ‘dead’, there is no need to hide what you like if it is not ‘cool’. For example wearing a kitsch item of clothing (e.g. tie dye), as an ironic joke or saying the word ‘naff’ sarcastically is unacceptable in the eye of post irony. Instead doing these things because you like them is acceptable. The sarcastic/ironic themes in my paintings are really a protest for expressing yourself with no façade.

‘Post-ironic adjective: meaning "after irony". Modern style of art or fashion that follows a phase that was ironic. Being sincere or earnest as opposed to flippant and sarcastic.’

The words in the paintings are inspired by words a father, uncle or granddad would say. As these relatives are out-of-touch with new trends and young persons colloquial terms, its a common fact they used words that are out of date that wouldn’t be acceptable to use in conversations between young people - Unless they are being used ironically. The goal was to take the words and put them in an ironic context then suggest that it should be acceptable to use.

Dying my canvas before anything else fed my need to create ‘alternative’ paintings. Exploring new techniques and new materials have been on going in my previous paintings, there is no change in these. Much like Angela De La Cruz, I want to push the boundaries of painting and use unexploited materials e.g. Dye and bleach.

Even though my paintings are aesthetically based around tie dye, tie dye is there to uphold my main attraction – Ironic Statements. For irony to shine trough I had to collaborate the words and the tie dye. I made the paintings in a straightforward manor (block text, centred, and layered on a tie dye background) so that the paintings became quite blunt and straight-to-the point. Alternatively, it does not matter if the irony is initially obvious or not.

Ed Ruscha, inspired text on the paintings aesthetically via his book ‘They called her Styrene’. He predominantly uses a bold text called Octin College Free. I decide to use a text called Ariel, which is similar to his but more plain and bold. I avoided any fanciness that could distract the viewer and take away the meaning of the words. (Tie Dye is taking care of the ‘fanciness’). In Ruscha’s work, the text is the first thing you see. This is what I wanted in my paintings – Firstly, the text, secondly the Tie-dye.

There are many ways of displaying these canvases and still be as affective, e.g. draping and pinned. Even though these possibilities were present, the idea of stretching them appealed to me because traditionally paintings have been stretched over bars. Although, the paintings are an effort to aid evolution of painting, the substance of painting has to be there. Them being viewed as paintings, not sculptures or anything else is important to me.

Tie-dye has a history in death and renewal. Forming in 500AD in Southern America and 600AD in Japan, this ‘style’ was used to depict different tribes, kingdoms, and roles. Even back then it was used to divide cultures. Much like now, trends divided people. I wanted to use the idea of trends because it is more abundant now then it ever has been. It is a common factor in society splitting and dividing us in to subcultures constantly. Emerging in the 1960’s, tie-dye was used by young people exploring their individuality. During the 1960’s and since then, tie-dye has always been in a ‘scene’ and had association with minority groups. Tie-dye has re-emerge as a style, and as a style it dominated my minority group (skateboarding), this is why I have a relationship with it and perfect reason/ sense of necessitate to incorporate it into my work.

Medium is the University of Westminster’s 2011 graduate degree show for BA Mixed Media Fine Art. This show comprises 44 artists working in a variety of different media; previous shows have displayed high levels of ambition and exciting ways of seeing and responding to the world around us. The level of variety within the year group offers a range of interests that has diversified the work significantly. Medium, several years of undergraduate study and experimentation in the making, promises to be the most ambitious and exciting yet.

The show is taking place at P3 Ambika on Marylebone Road. This 14’000 square ft. space offers a huge range of daring and formidable opportunities, the nature of which will allow this group to flourish practices that have already developed far beyond the limitations of the studio space. Centrally located opposite Baker Street tube station, this venue is ideally situated.

So far this is called 'The Purple One' for obvious reasons.

I really like the aesthetics so far, and I think these can either be great or lame.

When I started making these at first I concentrated doing them on celebrities which I thought wee unworthy to be in the limelight. This is my most recent one. Up until now I have been experimenting with size, colour and where to put the hinges. I feel this one is the most successful and I'm going to use this as a template for the rest.

End of Year Show

I arrived at my end of year show with 15mins to go, standardly. So I didn't manage to get much misc photos. Still, here is some photo's of my work, they are the 'Marble Paintings" I have been working on.

Marble Painting's. The Creation of. Plus an Exhibition.

I have been making some new paintings, called 'Marble Painting's' They have been taking a while because I couldn't get them to look the way I wanted, and I needed frames made for them blah blah blah. But now I have painted two. I am super stoked on the way they turned out. Here are some pictures of the process, and the final pieces.

I had to draw water out of this painting. I mixed the two colours of paint with water so they wouldn't mix.

Fin.

My Reaction Paintings were in a show last night near Aldgate East. It turned out well, I feel that i got the best space. Thanks for People that came. Thanks to Nicola for taking the photo's, there aren't many because we were to busy killin' it.
